City Mayor Robert Eusebio with Senate President Manuel Villar as guest of honor yesterday inaugurated the three-story Pasig Mega Market.

The Mutya ng Pasig facility was renovated without disrupting market activities and causing the least impediment to traffic flow amid fast-tracked construction.

“Finishing touches are the only things left to be done,” Eusebio said, adding that stalls of fruits, vegetables, eggs, coconut, dried fish, frozen meat, rice retailers, candies and groceries were already in place.

Villar said he was pleased to see how the local government rebuilt its marketplace.

“I am a son of market vendor, you (referring to the vendors) have a soft spot in my heart. I basically grew up in the marketplace,” he said in Filipino.

“I wish the other cities will follow suit.”

At present, there are six other public markets in Buting, Bagong Ilog, Kapasigan, Rosario, Manggahan, Santolan, and at least six private facilities in San Joaquin, Sta Lucia, De Castro, Countryside, Napico and Buenas.

Administrative Officer IV Joseph Rugano said the stall rent would be competitive in the metropolis in the range of P280 to P350 a month.

“The wet market comprising of fish, chicken and meat will all be placed in one section. It was topsy-turvy in the old market.”

Eusebio said the rates would undergo fine-tuning.

“We have to maintain the facility, the council is still studying the fees to be collected but for sure we are still the lowest,” he said.
