KALIBO, Aklan — Aklan Rep. Florencio Miraflores said more airport developments will be implemented by the national government to enhance the international status of Kalibo International Airport as a premier gateway to Boracay Island.

Last week, planners and surveyors of the Department of Transportation and Communications (DoTC) discussed their plans with Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) Kalibo manager Engr. Percy Malonesio to improve the airport facilities.

"By 2009, the Kalibo airport will substantially have more developments by modernizing the old domestic airport. An extension of the runway to comply with the 2,500 meters standards will be pursued. A one-kilometer diversion road will also be finalized to re-route the existing portion of the provincial road to give way to the runway extension," the solon said.

As of December 2008, the R48-million new terminal building at the Kalibo International Airport is 38.27 percent completed while the R54.175-million installation of the Instrument Landing System is ongoing. (Boy Ryan B. Zabal)
