MANILA, Philippines - The Navotas City government announced yesterday the extension of payment hours in granting amnesty to its delinquent taxpayers.

Mayor Toby Tiangco said that “this is to make sure that the great majority of the NavoteƱos could benefit from City Ordinance 2008-10,” an ordinance that grants amnesty to delinquent real property taxpayers. Sanctioned by the city council, the tax amnesty started on Sept. 12, last year and ends on March 12. It would offer those who would like to avail of the project to condone surcharges, penalties and the 100-percent interest of their unsettled obligations.

Tiangco said that starting today and tomorrow payment period would begin at 8 a.m. up to 8 p.m. On Saturday, it would start at 8 a.m. to 5 p.m and on March 9 to 11 payment will start at 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. On March 12, last day, it will begin at 8 a.m. up to midnight.

Tiangco said that not included in the amnesty are real properties which have been disposed of, or forfeited at public auction, or those subject of pending cases, or those real property tax assessment against which have been sustained or allowed by the courts, and those variance assessment which has already been made.

Tiangco reminded delinquent taxpayers who failed to avail of the tax amnesty program that their property would be auctioned off by the city government.

“The grant of tax amnesty would enable the city to raise the revenue of tax collection and at the same time we responded to the clamor of the taxpayers to help them settle their obligations,” Tiangco said. – Pete Laude
