Davao City ] Crematorium to open this year: councilor

Friday, January 16, 2009 [ sunstar.com.ph ]

A LOCAL government-owned crematorium is set to operate this year, said Councilor Nilo Abellera in Wednesday's City Council Media Hour at the Davao City Hall.

Two crematoriums will be constructed at the Wireless Cemetery, which is seen to solve the problem of having to keep land for the dead, Abellera said.

Abellera first pushed for the construction of a crematorium in a privilege speech in July last year. He sees many benefits for the city in having a crematorium. Two of which, he added, are cost-saving and space-saving.

The councilor said it would also help poor families lessen the cost of burying their departed loved ones. Cremation, he added, is the less-expensive alternative since memorial lots are becoming more expensive.

Abellera said the crematorium would remove the local government's burden of looking for new burial sites to ease the crowding of tombs in local cemeteries.

The proposed crematorium will use the high-heat technology, which could also be used to incinerate livestock affected by dangerous diseases, confiscated pirated disks from raids, dangerous substances, pathological wastes, and exhumed remains from old graves, among others, Abellera said.

Abellera intends to present a proposal for the project in a week's time.

Although no particular date has been set for the start of the project, the councilor said Mayor Rodrigo Duterte wanted the project to be started and finished this year. (Candice Boiser and Jade Zaldivar, AdDU interns)
