Power upgrade in Boracay calls for 2-month brownout

BORACAY Island: The Aklan Electric Cooperative (Akelco) has announced a two-month power shortage here due to the construction of the 30-MVA in Sitio Tambisaan in Barangay Manoc-Manoc, reported Panay News.

Engr. Rogen de los Reyes, assistant manager for operations, said the 30-MVA would provide a sustainable and reliable power supply in the island that would boost the tourism industry of the island.

It was disclosed that the 10-MVA substation located in Barangay Caticlan, Malay, Aklan serving the adjacent towns of Buruanga and Malay is overloaded, which is the reason for the frequent brownouts in Boracay Island.

Boracay Island has an existing demand of 9.55-megawatts daily owing to the influx of tourists and the opening of first-class hotels and establishments.

“The 30-MVA will answer the power shortage that the stakeholders and resort owners experience. It will minimize the low voltage and brownouts in nearby barangays and supply the electricity requirements of the island,” Delos Reyes noted.

The daily power interruption for two months would start from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., except on Sundays, is part of Akelco’s line conversion and upgrading of double and triple circuit lines.

De los Reyes said they would install 60-foot-high concrete posts up to the northern portions of the island by utilizing heavy equipments of Akelco to reduce the impact of power systems loss.
