NSWMC taps homeowner’s associations in waste segregation campaign

QUEZON CITY, Jan. 5 (PIA) -- The National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC) has tapped homeowners’ associations in Metro Manila to promote waste segregation at the household level.

The objective of SWM Homeowners Association in Metro Manila Project is to establish a materials recovery facility (MRF) in each subdivision or condominium unit in the city to facilitate easy collection of garbage.

Out of the 4,700 homeowners’ association in Metro Manila, 15 percent or 700 associations have already been tapped for the project, according to NSWMC executive director Emelita Aguinaldo.

Moreover, NSWMC has already signed a memorandum of agreement with 16 local government units in Metro Manila to implement the said project.

Funds amounting to P2.8 million have already been released to the LGUs. This is 20 percent of the mobilization fund to be utilized for training and seminars on the establishment of MRFs. An additional 30 percent of funding will be released this month to accelerate the implementation of the said project.

NSWMC will be monitoring the implementation of this project, and look into possible replication of the said project nationwide.
