Government to use solar lamps in Laguna Lake dike

08/06/2008 [ tribune.net.ph ]

Solar powered-lampposts will be installed in the dike running beside the four-lane, 270-kilometer Laguna Lake road, in a bid to explore renewable energy, the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) announced yesterday.

The shift to solar power was formalized in an agreement signed by the Laguna Bay Area Rapid Transit (Labart), the LLDA, the Department of Public Works and Highways and Solar Electric Co. Inc. (Solarco).

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) is currently charges local government units a flat rate of P100 for each street light.

A small town like Taytay in Rizal province pays Meralco P 200,000 a month for the 2,000 streetlights in their locality.

Simultaneous with the program that would allow the government to save on the cost of Meralco power, the new lampposts are also expected to reduce hydrocarbon emissions.

The Labart was also designed to help ease traffic congestion in the province and interconnect the cities and towns of the province, making them more attractive to industrial locators and tourists. The project is patterned after Lake Tahoe in the United States.

Solar Electric Co. Inc. (Solarco), which specializes in the customized application of solar, wind and micro-hydro alternative energy, has been tapped to install the streetlights using solar panels and batteries.

The project also paves the way for electric buses, electric trains (the Light Rail Transit and the MetroRail plying Metro Manila), electric boats and solar-powered streetlights and street signs.

The government’s lakeshore road dike project, which started 2001, is expected to be completed by 2010. Jason Faustino
