Taguig sets aside 20 hectares for farming

Monday, August 04, 2008 [ manilatimes.net ]

Taguig City is setting aside 20 hectares of its lands for agriculture use to support the city’s food needs.

Mayor Freddie Tiñga cited the country’s current food situation as the basis for his move to allocate 20 hectares of land in his locality for food production.

“We have to tap our remaining agricultural lands to make sure that they contribute in our current food production. We need to maximize our local production,” Tiñga said.

Records from of the Taguig government showed that more than 150 hectares of lands in Barangays Calzada, Palingon, Ibayo and Napindan remain agricultural in nature and use.

Agricultural Office Head Elpidio Javier said the Taguig government is currently undertaking several crucial steps to maintain, if not further increase, the harvest of the city’s farmers.

One of these, he said, is teaching farmers the proper farming techniques. In a recently concluded seminar, Javier told participants that the city government will supply farmers with certified seedlings and fertilizers to ensure saleable harvest.

He added that with the help of Harbest AgriBusiness Corp., which can provide modern agriculture technology, farmers will learn to efficiently produce crops that are also resistant to the dry spell.

“We taught our farmers how to cope and adopt the latest methods for them to double their yields. The harvest will help sustain the availability of food against consumers’ growing demand,” Javier said.
