Montalban draws income from sanitary landfill

Friday, February 06, 2009 [ manilatimes.net ]

THE government of Montalban, including three of its barangays, continues to generate income from the operation of the provincial sanitary landfill located in Barangay San Isidro for the period January to December 2008.

A report indicated that the municipal government collected a total of P8,395,660 from trucks hauling garbage from Metro Manila to the provincial landfill as Road Right of Way (RROW) Fees. An additional income of P4,197,830 was generated as fumigation fees for the same period.

Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Solid Waste Contractors Association of the Philippines are questioning the said fumigation fee since this is already part of P600 tipping fee being paid by MMDA as stipulated in the contract.

The report said that there were 119,938 trips made by Metro Manila garbage haulers in 2008 that were charged P105 per trip by Montalban town. The same report revealed that for the same period and the same number of trips, Barangay San Isidro where the provincial landfill is located allegedly collected a total of P5,996,900 as RROW fees, while Barangay Macabud and Barangay San Jose both collected P3,598,140, with no receipts on record were issued to cover the collection of said fees.

The total income generated from the operation of the provincial landfill and collected by the Mon-talban government and three of its barangays stood at P25,786,670, which are are separate from the garbage tipping fees.-- James Konstantin Galvez
