Lapu-Lapu most competitive Visayas city

[ Manila Bulletin Online ] July 18, 2008

LAPU-LAPU CITY — This city under the stewardship of Mayor Arturo Radaza received the most coveted Asian Institute of Management’s Philippine Cities Competitiveness Ranking Project (PCCRP) award as the best over-all metro city in the Visayas last July 4 at a hotel in Makati City.

PCCRP listed six competitiveness factors. These are infrastructure, cost of doing business, human resource and training, responsiveness of local government unit (LGU) to business, dynamism of the local economy, and quality of life.

Lapu-Lapu bested Cebu and Mandaue cities in terms of infrastructure and quality of life.

The city plays host to major oil companies, the Export Processing Zone, Mactan-Cebu International Airport, cottage industries, shipbuilding and ship repair facilities. AIM also recognized Lapu-Lapu city’s effort in providing potable water into the locals’ households.

Lapu-Lapu City was also cited by the World Bank as No.1 for its City Development Strategy project.

The study covered 90 cities, categorizing Cebu, Mandaue and LapuLapu under metro cities in the Visayas.

PCCRP serves as the policy research under the AIM Policy Center’s Competitiveness Program. It aims to measure the competitiveness of cities in the country by analyzing relevant indicators which affect the economic, political and prosperity of its respective residents.

PCCRP, which started in 1999, is a biennial independent study conducted throughout the country.
