Residents of the entire island of Mindoro led by Cong. Rodolfo G. Valencia lauded President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo for designating Calapan City as the Regional Government Center (RGC) of Region IVB.
The President issued the directive under Executive Order No. 682 toward evolving the entire region into a catalyst for economic activity and development.
In line with this development, MIMAROPA (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan) regional offices are now being mobilized for relocation to Calapan City, with satellite offices expected to open within six months from the effectivity of EO 682. Full transfer of all offices is expected within 18 months thereafter. Heads of departments, agencies and bureaus, government-owned and controlled corporations and government financial institutions are directed to support the transfer of these regional offices.
According to Valencia, founder and past chairman of MIMAROPA, the center will help fast track regional development by setting up a well-coordinated system of government service while increasing economic activity. Under EO 682, the task of formulating a blueprint for the center’s operation in order to meets its goals and objectives has been assigned to the National Economic Development Authority IV-B in coordination with the Office of the Presidential Adviser for New Government Centers, other government units and the private sector.
Metro Manila previously served as the Interim Regional Government Center for Region IV-B. The establishment of RGC in the MIMAROPA region after its creation in 2002 is a major development for the province which will augur well for its future.
Valencia said the RGC’s presence in Calapan City will open up opportunities in addition to the economic benefits brought forth by the Strong Republic Nautical Highway. The city is known as a "Gateway to the Golden Isle" and "Rice Granary of Southern Tagalog."
