2 big China construction firms eyeing RP

[ Manila Bulletin Online ] April 2, 2008

Undaunted by the controversy hounding other Chinese projects in the country, two huge Chinese construction firms – China SC Construction Holding Ltd. and Xin Xing Ductile Iron Pipes – are seriously exploring various investment opportunities in the country.

This was reported by special envoy for investment and tourism Susan Barlin to Tourism Secretary Joseph A. Durano.

According to Barlin, the two Chinese firms primarily comprised the Chinese business delegation from the China CEO Clubs that she organized to look into the tourism investment opportunities in the country.

China SC Construction president Jin Nie and Xinxing president Ma Lijie represented their respective companies. Both officials were toured to the possible investment sites and got to meet top government agency heads and some local government leaders.

China SC is an $ 11 billion publicly listed company while Xinxing is the world’s biggest iron pipes producer.

In the case of Xinxing, Barlin said company officials held initial talks with officials of concessionaires Manila Water and Maynilad for possible water supply solutions.

China SC’s Nie had discussed possible projects with Rep. Rodolfo G. Valencia for the Mindoro province, Barlin said.

Based on their initial discussion, Nie has expressed interest for the development of a 500-hectare property in Batulao that could be approved by the Philippine Retirement Authority into an ideal retirement area complete with hotels, golf courses, industrial parks among others.

In addition, Valencia has also submitted to the Chinese official a study brief for the Mindoro Nickel Mining.

Oriental Mindoro also needs investments in power and energy, telecommunications, transportation and agriculture.
