BORACAY — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has warned the Provincial Planning and Development Office in Aklan to be cautious in developing the Carabao Island, located in Romblon, as another tourist destination.
In issuing its warning, the Phivolcs said the island is located within the Tablas Fault line and it might pose a threat to tourists in case an earthquake occurs.
It was learned that Carabao Island has been included in the 2010 Expanded Tourism Plan of Aklan as the Department of Transportation and Communication (DoTC) has reportedly proposed to have another airport on the earthquake-prone island.
Meanwhile, Provincial Planning and Development Officer Roget Esto said that if the plan pushes through, Boracay Island will be surrounded by three airports.
Kalibo International Airport and Caticlan Airport are two important gateways to Boracay Island.
