Twenty homeless families will benefit from the P1.5 million raised by the Taguig City government through a highly successful culinary event it staged last December.
At the signing of a memorandum of agreement (MOA) this week, Lightomorrow Foundation Inc. executive director Kaye Tiñga turned over the proceeds to Gawad Kalinga (GK) for the construction of the 20 housing units at Purok 5, Sto. Tomas in Barangay Napindan, Taguig City.
Lightomorrow Foundation Inc. was a partner of the city government in the undertaking dubbed, “A Taste of the City: The Many Flavors of Taguig.”
“The proceeds of the event will surely go a long way in providing shelter for the city’s homeless. We are hoping that we can continue with this activity, so we can help build more of these villages and eventually change the way people live in Taguig,” Tiñga said.
GK Regional Director Rodolfo Lanuza said the project, to be named “Taste of the City GK Village,” will have the full features of a GK community and will provide for health, education, and livelihood opportunities geared towards an integrated, holistic and sustainable development.
Taguig Mayor Sigfrido Tiñga said the project complements the city government’s efforts in continuing to uplift the lives of the underprivileged by providing them decent shelter.
Restaurant owners who gave their all-out support and participated in the food festival witnessed the MOA signing and turnover of funds.
To date, the city government and Gawad Kalinga have built 108 housing units in Pinagsama Village in Barangay Western Bicutan. An additional 608 housing units for the PNR Site relocatees and other beneficiaries are in various stages of completion in Barangays Western Bicutan and Napindan.
The Taguig Local Housing Office will assess the potential beneficiaries of the Taste of Taguig GK Village. – Rhodina Villanueva
