Keep Loakan airport open -- Domogan

[ journal.com.ph ] June 7, 2008

BAGUIO CITY - “Keep the Loakan Airport open.”

This was the appeal yesterday by several groups, led by Rep. Mauricio Domogan, urging the government not to close down the city’s only commercial airport.

At a press briefing, the Baguio Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, the city’s main marketing arm, also strongly opposed the planned closure of Loakan Airport.

Ms. Betty Tiu, head of the travel and tours group and pannel member said: “The President loves Baguio, why would she want the closure of the airport?”

Domogan said the entire city should back the appeal, adding that he would deliver a privilege speech in Congress against closing down the airport.

The Loakan Airport was the landing site of Philippine Airlines’ first domestic flight in 1941. During the 1990 killer earthquake, the airport served as the only link to the outside world where disaster and relief coordination was done. Baby Tong
