In preparation for business process outsource locators

By JACK C. GADAINGAN

TACLOBAN CITY — Buildings at the Leyte Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Park are scheduled for upgrading according to standards and specification requirements of Information-Technology (IT) and business process outsource (BPO) locators.

Nelita Baguna, head of Leyte Tourism and Investment Promotion Center (LTIPC), said that the upgrading of the buildings at the Leyte Academic Center will be undertaken to meet ICT industry needs.

"Since the province is continually marketing and promoting the area for IT and BPO locators, we have to equip it more to suit the needs of IT and BPO companies," Baguna said.

She also said that the provincial government of Leyte, through the leadership of Gov. Carlos Jericho "Icot" Petilla, has been working continuously to improve capability and expand the Leyte ICT Park’s service offerings.

The province has been supporting the IT industry through promotions in and outside of the country--in effecting a global business community, with the end view of addressing employment and stirring economic activity in the province.

Baguna said that in order to facilitate a better marketing strategy for the area and encourage more locators, the buildings should be equipped with reliable electricity, telecommunications, and water and backup electricity power source.

"These are among the things locators look for before establishing business, as they want no hassles and worries on their part on such basic necessities," Baguna said.

The continually burgeoning IT companies are more inclined to locate in technology sophisticated infrastructures and in good locations.

Baguna said this is what the LTIPC would try to have in case they invite potential locators.

It can be recalled that in response to President Arroyo’s call to promote the cyber-services corridor and create over a million jobs each year, the Leyte province has been considered a potential expansion site for BPO and other IT related companies.

The Leyte ICT Park has for its infrastructure support a total of 84 rooms in which 26 rooms are occupied by AMA Computer College, six rooms by Coredata, and three rooms by LIDER Review Center.

It also has a 2,435 square meter-gymnasium which is of the same size as two basketball courts including rooms for lockers and rentable spaces.

The province currently is ongoing negotiations with an IT company that is considering to locate at the gymnasium.

At present there are about 49 vacant rooms all ready for occupancy for the new locators.
