The Mailanen interchange of the 42-km. long Southern Tagalog Arterial Road (STAR) Tollway was opened to motorists yesterday, providing motorists going to Lucena, Quezon and the Bicol Region a faster alternative route to the Maharlika Highway.

Built at a cost of P100 million, the Mailanen interchange, located at Ibaan, Batangas between Lipa City and Batangas City, could be used by southbound motorists coming from Sto. Tomas and Lipa City to go to the neighboring Batangas municipalities of Ibaan, Rosario, and San Juan.

From San Juan – home of Laiya that is home to a string of popular beach resorts, motorists can gain access to the Maharlika Highway to go to Candelaria or Lucena, Quezon and on to the Bicol Region.

Northbound motorists coming from the Batangas City International Container Port can use the Mailanen exit in going to Quezon province and the Bicol Region.

Melvin Nazareno, president of the STAR Infrastructure Development Corp., the private investor company which built the new toll road said, a survey of travel time at the route using the STAR Tollway could save approximately 30 minutes from the usual route passing through Alaminos, San Pablo (Laguna), Tiaong (Quezon), Candelaria and Lucena via the Maharlika Highway.

Savings on fuel as well as a safer and more comfortable ride offsets paying the toll fee, Nazareno said.

In going to Lucena, Quezon using the STAR Tollway, south-bound vehicles may enter through the Sto. Tomas portion, exit at Mailanen interchange, then proceed to Candelaria, Quezon through Ibaan, Rosario, and San Juan (Batangas).

For the convenience of motorists, STAR Tollway personnel will provide directions at the Mailanen interchange exit.

The motorists can also call STAR Tollway telephone numbers (043) 757-2277 and (043) 756-7870 for directions and motorists assistance or ask the assistance of the security personnel who regularly patrol the entire stretch of the STAR tollway.

President Arroyo inaugurated the STAR Tollway, which spans Sto. Tomas, Batangas to Balagtas, Batangas City. The government’s support of the tollway construction was in line with its efforts to accelerate economic development in the CALABARZON area.
