Davao mayor okays P100-M for socialized housing program

[ Manila Bulletin Online ] December 9, 2008

DAVAO CITY (PNA) — City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte has granted the recommendation of the Davao City Council to allocate P100 million for socialized housing program of the city.

City Councilor Arnulfo Ricardo Cabling said the P100-million fund will be utilized for the socialized housing programs of the city’s poor families.

Cabling, chair of the committee on housing, rural and urban development, said the housing fund will be handled by the City Local Housing Board, the body tasked by the City Shelter Code to handle socialized housing.

The Shelter Code, chaired by the city mayor, aims to address urban housing woes targeting homeless families living as informal settlers in government and private lands.

He said the P100 million is part of the P3-billion bank loan the city obtained to fund its developmental projects.

The Davao City Council last week gave Duterte the authority to obtain the said loan, the biggest ever by the city government.

Cabling said Duterte requested the council to identify projects to be financed by the loan.

Under its Urban Land Reform Program in compliance with the Urban Housing Development Act (UDHA), Duterte had allocated about R500 million to purchase relocation sites and loan assistance to on-site settlers of lands whose owners agreed to sell.
