Taguig cited for family-dwelling campaign

Taguig City has been cited for having the country’s best housing program by the Galing Pook Foundation.

Mayor Freddie Tinga said the recognition of the Family Townhomes program “affirms the city government’s efforts in striking a balance in growth and development all over Taguig,” underscoring sustainability in delivering services to residents.

The Galing Pook Awards annually recognizes the best practices at the local government level making it the yardstick of performance in various social services such as housing.

Dr. Eddie Dorotan, executive director of Galing Pook Foundation, described Family Town-homes as a forward-looking concern.

“What sets it apart is that it looks beyond building houses. More important, the program is anchored on community participation which creates a sense of ownership for its beneficiaries,” he said.

City hall launched it in 2006 as a public housing program with the backing of Gawad Kalinga, Habitat for Humanity, and the Coalition for the Homeless Foundation.

The model consists of three-story condominium buildings, each having 12 housing units, featuring Habitat for Humanity’s innovations of steel frames and concrete interlocking blocks.

Tinga said a unit at Family Townhomes is amortized monthly from P500 to as much as P950 for 30 years, making it affordable for low-income bona fide residents.

He said 535 families have moved to condominium sites at Pinagsama Village and FTI Compound in the villages of Western Bicutan and Bagumbayan.

By year-end, at least 242 housing units in various stages of completion are expected to be ready for occupancy in Calzada-Tipas and other villages, while 843 more units are lined up for construction, according to Tinga. Ferdinand Fabella
