Housing fair in Davao City targets OFWs

Tuesday, October 20, 2009 | MANILA, PHILIPPINES [ BusinessWorld Online ]

DAVAO CITY — The Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council and the city’s chapter of the Chamber of Real Estate and Builders’ Association (CREBA) are holding a three-day housing fair for developers to showcase projects to the local market, especially to families of overseas Filipino workers, or OFWs, as well as to retirees.

"The event, which opens on Oct. 28, is aimed at giving housing developers an avenue in presenting their projects," Carlos Omar A. Vargas, president of the city’s chapter of CREBA, said in an interview. "Overseas Filipino workers who cannot come should tell their relatives to visit the event so they can start choosing houses they want to buy. It would be better for them to spend their money on property because it is among the best investments."

At least 10 big developers have signified their intention to join the fair. Housing units for sale in this event could reach about 3,000, Mr. Vargas said.

Also joining the event, Mr. Vargas added, is the Philippine Retirement Authority, the state agency that is promoting the country to retirees, whether they are locals or foreigners. The authority is tasked to promote local properties developed according to international standards as retirement havens. — CQF
