The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has intensified its flood and disaster preparedness with the construction of the P2.22 billion Iloilo Flood Control Project in Western Visayas Region.
Flood control project director Patrick Gatan reported to Secretary Rogelio Singson that the Iloilo Flood Control Project in Western Visayas Region is now substantially complete ahead of its schedule.
The project is now 96.31% complete and will soon be operational before the year ends.
Undersecretary Rafael Yabut, in-charge of the PMO-operation, said the construction of the Jaro Floodway & Improvement of Tigum and Aganan Rivers in Iloilo City started in April 2006 and is scheduled to be completed by the last working day of 2011.
“The project which is mainly composed of river improvement and construction of floodways aims to create more sustainable urban community and provide safer, more pleasant living condition for people in the urban area of Iloilo City,” Gatan added.
It involves the construction of Jaro Floodway, improvement of Tigum River, improvement of Aganan River, and construction of six (6) bridges. Two floodways, Jaro Floodway and La Paz Floodway are employed to divert the excess flood discharge of Jaro River toward the Iloilo Strait.
