Megaworld withdraws land offer for new city hall

INVESTOR Megaworld Corporation has withdrawn its offer to sell a portion of its 54-hectare property at the old Iloilo airport site in Mandurriao district as potential site for the new City Hall.

A letter dated October 24, 2008 signed by Antonio T. Tan, Megaworld Senior Vice President for Operation, showed its withdrawal offer of a proposal to sell Lot 3 covering 4,596 square meters at P3,500 per square meter.

Tan said Megaworld made the proposal as part of its continuing corporate commitment and responsibility to grow and partner with the local community where its developments are located.

He said "it was given with the best of intentions, to assist the City Government of Iloilo in its program of relocating the now demolished old city hall building to a bigger site to accommodate the growing operations of the City Government," adding that it is an unsolicited proposal, "which may be accepted, rejected or be subject of negotiation during the offer period."

The second offer of Megaworld dated October 20, 2008 from Tan has met stiff opposition from majority of the City Council after a first offer dated October 13, 2008 from Megaworld's official Rudy Quintana Jr. showed P3,000 per square meter.

The first offer is in consonance with the current appraised value of the property by the City Assessor's Office as dictated by the zoning map of Iloilo City.

The city is planning to build an eight-storey building in the area with enough parking space at the Megaworld site. (LCP)
