CAPITOL COMPLEX, Pili, Camarines Sur — Camarines Sur has been formally launched as a Gawad Kalinga Designer Province, the first in the country, by GK Foundation founder Tony Meloto and with Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap, a staunch GK supporter, as guest of honor.
The designation was a result of the broad-based programs of Camarines Sur Gov. Luis Raymond F. Villafuerte focusing on the basic needs of the province’s less privileged constituents particularly on housing, health and nutrition, and livelihood.
The GK Designer Province features the GK Bed and Breakfast, the first of its kind in the country that will house local and international volunteers, including tourists who may want to stay while helping build GK villages. Income from the Bed and Breakfast will go directly to the GK Fund that will be used in building GK communities.
Villafuerte said the partnership between GK and the province showcases the Bicolanos’ will to stand up and challenge the Filipino stereotype that life is hard and doesn’t get any better.
"It can be done and we will prove it," the governor said.
The Bed and Breakfast feature is a modern concept and innovative approach to sustainable development. Providing shelter is one thing but what is more important is to help people find means of sustainable income, Villafuerte added.
Villafuerte explained that the bed and breakfast facilities in GK villages were put up to let other people see the beauty and vibrancy of GK communities.
Camarines Sur gained international status for its world-class beaches that are ideal for wake-boarding. With the GK immersion projects that are widely known, more local and foreign tourists are expected to visit GK sites to study the community, help build houses and immerse in GK life, Meloto said.
"The creation of GK communities in all cities and municipalities of Camarines Sur marks the start of veering away from the poor and impoverish image the province had.
