Taytay plans to build garbage transfer station at town center

Friday, December 05, 2008 [ manilatimes.net ]

TAYTAY, Rizal: Inspired by the technological advances in Hong Kong’s garbage disposal system, a small town in Rizal said that it would be constructing a state-of-the-art garbage transfer station that is claimed to be “virtually odorless,” right in the heart of the town proper.

In a statement, Mayor Joric Gacula of Taytay said that they would adopt a modern-day technology with they saw during a three-day ecological tour of Hong Kong.

The technology, he added, is so impressive that Hong Kong has established a garbage transfer station right at the heart of the city.

“It’s amazing how that technology has kept the stink from adversely affecting the people in that densely populated city,” said Gacula, adding that the project is in line with Republic Act 9003 otherwise known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act.

Likewise, the mayor said that they would implement radical changes in the solid waste management system of the locality.

Among the changes in the system is to require all business establishments to put up three types of garbage bins that would take on recyclable waste, biodegradable and non-biodegradable garbage. He further hinted the provision of similar garbage bins in major thoroughfares all over the town.-- James Konstantin Galvez
