The ecosystem of the world-renowned beach of Boracay must be protected at all costs, Sen. Manny Villar said after learning that the developer of the Caticlan airport in Aklan, plans to level the hill in the area to just accommodate the rehabilitation and expansion to become international airport to accommodate more local and foreign tourists.
However, land form specialist from the Department of Natural Resources and Environment revealed that leveling the hill will trigger local hydro-met changes on this environment that would eventually lead to long shore erosion of beaches along Boracay and dying up of Lupo-lupo lake near the existing airport
Earlier, engineers of the Caticlan International Airport Development Corp. (Ciadc) had informed the Aklan provincial government that they will remove the hill as part of the expansion and upgrading of the Caticlan Airport amounting to P2.5 billion.
