Construction of Kalibo terminal starts

[ Manila Bulletin Online ] March 30, 2008

KALIBO, Aklan – The construction of the much awaited terminal building at the Kalibo Airport is expected to commence on March 31.

Representative Florencio Miraflores said the airport’s construction is part of the P130-million fund promised by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in 2007 for the upgrading of the Kalibo Airport which is being geared to become an international landmark for tourism.

"We thank President Arroyo for fulfilling her promise. The airport upgrading is for the good of all Aklan residents for it will boost the tourism industry," Miraflores said.

Aklan is known for its Boracay Island, considered as the country’s premier beach destination.

Miraflores said the package includes P80 million for the Kalibo Airport Terminal with the P50 million released last year already by the Department of Budget and Management for the installation of the Instrument Landing System (ILS).

Kalibo is hosting international flights coming from China and Incheon, South Korea. Majority of these airline passengers include those of Philippine Airlines and Asian Spirit bound for Boracay island.

Currently, the provincial government is promoting Kalibo Airport to become an international airport for Western Visayas. (PNA)
