MMDA opens alternative terminal for provincial buses

03/27/2008 [ tribune.net.ph ]

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has opened the North Road Rail Station (NRRS) along Edsa-North Avenue as pick-up points for passengers of all provincial buses.

MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando yesterday said the NRRS beside the TriNoma shopping mall will serve as an alternative bus terminal to provincial bus operators to relieve the traffic- prone areas in Cubao, Quezon City.

“The NRRS is a good alternative loading and unloading station for passengers going out of Metro Manila because it can accommodate a big number of buses at any given time,” Fernando said.

The NRRS is designed to accommodate at least two slots for each provincial bus company operating in Metro Manila.

The NRRS will be strictly manned by traffic personnel round-the-clock on three shifts, free of charge to the government.

MMDA Traffic Operations Center chief Angelito Vergel de Dios said the NRRS could provide a solution to the worsening traffic condition along Edsa, particularly in Cubao area which is home to at least 15 provincial bus terminals.

The MMDA said it has started implementing strictly the “nose-in, nose-out” policy (for a bus to park in head first and go out the same way) at all bus terminals along Edsa, particularly in Cubao, since the start of the Holy Week last week.

“Each enforcer has been given marching orders to apprehend violators of the nose-in, nose-out policy because a single bus that goes against this regulation will cause a gridlock along the entire stretch of the major thoroughfare,” De Dios said. Ben Gines Jr.
