Davao region areas position as mining hubs

DAVAO CITY — The Regional Development Council has declared Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental as mining hubs of the Davao Region.

Vicente T. Lao, chairman of the council and the Mindanao Business Council, said the declaration should prod the local governments and the private sector of the two provinces to focus on promoting their respective mining sectors.

The declaration was made during a recent meeting in Mati City, the capital of Davao Oriental.

"We have to take a look at how to bring development to those provinces because mining is considered their strength," Mr. Lao said, adding that the provinces pushed for the declaration, arguing that they were always left behind in terms of development.

More authority

Mati City Mayor Michelle N. Rabat and Davao Oriental Governor Corazon N. Malanyaon earlier pressed the National Government to declare the province as a mining hub.

For its part, Compostela Valley Governor Arthur T. Uy lamented that while the province hosts mining operations, it has not received its revenue share from these operations, including from small-scale miners in Diwalwal.

Mr. Uy has asked the provincial board to draft a resolution that will allow the provincial government to evaluate the volume of gold mined out of Diwalwal in order to find out how much revenue share the province should get.

The provincial governor also asked the Philippine Mining Development Corp., a government-run mining agency overseeing Diwalwal operations, to give to the provincial government its share of the proceeds.

Mr. Lao also said his group supports the call of local government units in mining areas for additional power to regulate mining applications in their areas. — C. Q. Francisco
