Cebu City in need of alternate dumpsite

[ Manila Bulletin Online ] September 10, 2008

CEBU CITY — The Cebu City government needs to find an alternate dumpsite as its current landfill is already filled to its capacity.

Cebu City Vice Mayor Michael Rama said that the city has already been producing from 350 to 400 tons of garbage a day, and that is why the city government is doing its best to come up with an alternate dumpsite.

He said that he and other city officials are currently considering Barangay Kalunasan, a mountain village in the city, as a landfill site because the dumpsite in Barangay Inayawan has already reached more than maximum height of the garbage pile.

However, Rama said that acquiring a new sanitary landfill will not be that easy because it would also require huge amount of money.

He noted the city government of Cebu has spent some R300 million for the construction of the 15.41-hectare Inayawan landfill that started its operation in 1998.

He also said that city government is spending some R70 million a year for solid waste management, including the operation of garbage trucks and the maintenance of the landfill.

Meanwhile, the Region 7 office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) advised the cities in Cebu to consider clustering of sanitary landfills to minimize rubbish impact on the environment. (Phoebe Jen Indino)
