500 houses for poor to rise in Navotas

09/19/2011 [ tribune.net.ph ]

Some 500 housing units will soon rise at Navotas Tanza Socialized Housing site through the efforts of Mayor John Rey Tiangco who forged an agreement with the Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit organization which builds houses for underprivileged Filipinos.

The mayor expressed gratitude to Habitat president Ricky Jacinto who vowed to work hand in hand with the former to realize the local government’s dream of providing shelters to the city’s homeless.

As a result, Tiangco and Jacinto led the ceremonial signing of a memorandum of agreement (MoA) late last week at the city hall grounds.

The two made commitments to raise funds and draw volunteers to build 500 housing units for Navotenos.

These houses will be awarded to Navotenos who live in danger-prone areas and those who may be affected by future projects of the local government such as the construction of the Navotas Coastal Dike.

“This project shall not only build homes for Navotenos but new lives as well,” Tiangco said.

He added: “If helping other people is an epidemic, I hope that this will spread fast and affect all NavoteƱos.”

The site wherein these houses will rise is an 8.4-hectare fish pond in Barangay Tanza which was developed into a lot designed to accommodate at least 1,200 row houses.

Prior to the project, former mayor and now Rep. Tobias Tiangco funded the construction of 50 housing units under his Priority Assistance Development Fund last year while another 100 housing units are set to be built this year.

“This clearly shows that if the local government and the national government would cooperate and coordinate with each other, any project can be implemented faster for the benefit of the constituents,” the city’s lone district representative said. Arlie O. Calalo
